The old-timers that taught us how to make wine could source good grapes but barrels were expensive and hard to come by. So, they went to local distilleries where used bourbon barrels were usually free as they were no longer of any value in making whiskey. The unintended consequence was that in the wine barrel aging process, hints of the oaked whiskey were carried forward in the wine. We replicate that process because we love the taste of this special family tradition and to honor those family wine makers that came before us.
